Winifred was born 1889 in Ruabon. She was the daughter of a farmer. Winifred had 1 brother and 8 sisters. She worked on her father’s farm and in 1911 is on the census at The Fields Farm, Maesbury.
Winifred was a member of the Red Cross obtaining her proficiency badge before 1914. She joined the Shropshire 40 VAD and worked as a nurse and carried out general duties at Ardmillan House Auxiliary Hospital from January 1916 until February 1917 then moved to Pentre Pant Cottage Hospital and worked there until December 1919.
Winifred could only offer 2 days a week at the hospitals as she had to work on her Father’s farm. This was noted on her VAD form by Mrs Montgomery at Pentre Pant.
