Sarah Grant was born in Scotland on 16 December 1860. In 1885 she married Joseph Grant, also born in Scotland, who worked as a bank manager. Together they had four children: Ian (1887), James (1890), Joseph (1895 – 1895), William (1896 – 1903).
In the 1901 census the family were living at 15 Willow Street, a large 11 roomed house, with two servants – Mary Jones, aged 19, and Emily Webb, a nurse aged 18). The family were still living here in 1911 with one servant, Jane Owen aged 22. 15 Willow Street was Old Bank House. No. 13 had been Parr’s bank, next to No. 11 The Boar’s Head.
During the War Sarah served as treasurer on the Oswestry War Guild Committee. The committee coordinated local women to knit socks, bandages, gloves and other items to send to soldiers serving on the front line.
Sarah died in July 1921, aged 60. Her husband Joseph died on 22 May 1925. He left probate of £1661 12s 5d to their son Ian who was then living in Northwich.
