Mary was born in 1875 in Oswestry to retired Schoolmaster John (b. 1838) and Anne (b. 1844). She had four siblings: Katherine (b. 1873), married to John Philips; Alice (b. 1876), a teacher; Lucy (b. 1878) and John A (b. 1886). The family lived at 59 Park Avenue in Oswestry.
Mary was working as a cook for a school in Ormskirk, Lancashire before she joined the Shropshire 40 VAD and worked from 1/7/1917 to 24/12/1918. She carried out general ward and pantry work, working 2 days a week for 18 months.
Following the war she returned to the family home and lived there with her sister Alice, a former school teacher.
She passed away in 1955.
