Margaret was born 1 October 1882; the family lived at 2 Bailey Street, Oswestry. Her father Thomas (1854) was a Grocer and Managing Director of a Private Liability Company, her mother was Margaret (1854), she had four siblings, Lilian (1878), Thomas S (1880), Frances Elizabeth (1889) a Teacher and Daisy (1895) also in the house was a servant Ellen Davies (1873). According to the 1911 Census Margaret was working as a Book keeper at her father’s large Grocery Business.
War Years
Margaret gained her Red Cross proficiency badge before 1914 joining the Shropshire 40 VAD in January 1916. She worked at Ardmillan House Auxiliary Hospital from January 1916-May 1917 attending to the ward and helping with dressings. She then moved to Pentre Pant Hall doing the same work until she left the VAD in November 1918.
Margaret worked part time and received no pay. Mrs M Montgomery wrote on her VAD card that Margaret’s father ‘had a large grocery and so was only able to give Sundays and every 4th week 8-1pm. She gave extra work in her holidays.’
Post War
After the war Margaret worked as a Confectioner – Cake maker. She lived with her widowed father and sister at 11 Hampton Rd, Oswestry. Margaret died in 1940
