Born in 1890 Hilda trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital London from 1913 – 1916. In 1917 she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), a voluntary unit of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the UK and various other countries in the British Empire. She joined as a nursing sister and took up a post at the Woolverstone Hospital, Ipswich where she was paid 1 guinea a week. She remained there until she married William Herod in 1919.
When in Oswestry Hilda lived at Castle View Whittington. In London Hilda lived at 14,Pembridge Square, Kensington. After her marriage and the end of the war she travelled to Kingston, Jamaica several times. There is no census/ voting record of her husband in the UK until the late 1930’s suggesting that he had found work in Jamaica.
