Hilda was born in Hereford in 1888 to Jane and Thompson Charis Hesk. She had three older brothers, who were named Robert (b. 1877), Alfred (b. 1881) and George (b. 1885). Thompson was a dentist originally from Scotland and at some time in Hilda’s life moved his dental practice from Hereford to Sussex.
Hilda trained as a nurse at Salford Military Hospital from 1910 to 1913 before moving to Park Hall Military Hospital, where she worked for the duration of the war.
Hilda moved back to Sussex following the end of the war where she stayed until 1931; she then moved to Sheffield, where she stayed until her death in 1968.
