When Ellen Chivers Davies was born in 1888 in Morley, Yorkshire to a Reverend father (who worked as a Baptist Minister and Bookkeeper), and her mother, Eliza. She had one brother and three sisters.
War Years
Ellen’s date of engagement as a Nur: Ord with the VAD’s was 3.6.15 and date of termination 17.2.16
She enrolled in 2.9.16 and was selected as a Nurse on 4.9.16.
She was posted to Oswestry Military Hospital 13.9.16 to 28.2 17 and then to Military Hospital Cardiff from 21.5.17-21.6.18. Roath Cardiff was a primary school before being taken over for the extra wounded.
Post War
Her VAD card states that on 4.3.20 she was 31 and under D150 London 40 Detachment when she was living at 35 Bryanston Road.
Under the dept for references on her VAD card it states ‘Serbian Relief’.
In the 1939 Census she is living at 12 Bell St Shaftesbury, her occupation is Author. She wrote many books about Serbia including ‘Our Friends on the Farm’ and ‘Tales of Serbian Life’ and ‘Ward Tales’ , all stories and memories of the Great War.
‘These fictional tales, suitable for readers of all ages, offer a glimpse into the daily lives of those living in Eastern Europe.’
On the 1939 census she is also classed as a VAD reserve.
Ellen died in 1969 in Somerset at the age of 81.
