Dorothy was born in 1893 in Buckland, Berkshire. She was the daughter of a wealthy Land Agent James Stewart (1860) and Caroline Emily (1859). Her parents were married in 1887. She had 3 brothers and 2 sisters who were Frank Herbert (1888), Mary Gertrude (1890), Geraldine (1894), Raymond B (1897) and James B (1898). The family lived in a 14 roomed house with 3 servants and a German born Governess Meta Schothall.
War Years
Dorothy joined Shropshire 40 VAD Ardmillan House Auxiliary Hospital in March 1917 and served until 24 December 1917. She worked 8 hours per week carrying out ward and pantry duties.
From January 1918 Dorothy worked at Pentre Pant Cottage Hospital until December1918
Post War
In 1939 it was recorded that she was still at home with her widowed father and sister Geraldine and 2 servants
