Norah was born in 1897 as the daughter of tin and slate worker Oliver Beard (b. 1859) and Parnell (b. 1860). Norah has two other siblings; Leonard (b. 1885) and Emily (b. 1892). The family’s address is registered as them living at Penallt, Monmouth.
Norah initially joined the Birmingham Reserves, but was transferred to the Shropshire VAD. She started working as a cook at Park Hall Military Hospital on 20/4/1918, being paid 10 shillings per week. According to her VAD card, Norah was still working by the end of the war.
Norah married Farmer Ellis John Powell in 1923 and settled back at Buckholt Farm in Monmouth, working as a dairy maid.
She died in 1981.
