Sara was born in Oswestry in 1888 and lived in Weston Rhyn. Her father was G J Hiles, Brewers Agent (born 1843) her mother was Sarah E (born 1853) and she had a brother George (born 1885).
Sara qualified as a nurse from Guy’s Hospital, London in 1914 and joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service reserves. In 1914 she served in 6th General Hospital in Rouen, France as a Staff Nurse, later being promoted to sister.
Sarah was awarded the 1914 Star medal. Only 374 nurses received this medal for services in France and Flanders. These nurses had no prior active service.
Sara was also awarded the British War and Victory Medals. She returned to civilian nursing in 1920 and trained as a Midwife at St Thomas Hospital London in 1921. She moved to London in 1925.
In 1924 Sara travelled to Karachi and in 1936 she also travelled to Japan.
Sara died in London in 1946 leaving £1670 to her brother, George Thompson Hiles.
