Born on 12/4/1887 Nellie was the daughter of Samuel and Nellie Vida Parry-Jones. Samuel ran a leather manufacturing business in Oswestry until he died in 1909 when her mother Nellie took it over. She had a brother Richard born 1899 and sister Marjorie (23/11/1893 – June 1977).
Nellie started her nurse training at St Thomas’s Hospital London in 1913 and qualified in 1916. She married Philip Hinckley (1890 -1927) who was a patient at St Thomas’s Hospital after being wounded in France and transferred back to England (2nd Lieutenant 9th Leicester discharged 1915).
Nellie and Philip emigrated to Australia in 1924 but she returned to Oswestry with her baby daughter when Philip sadly died in 1927. By 1939 Nellie was School Matron at Ellesmere College.
Nellie’s sister Marjorie enrolled with VAD (Shropshire 24) in March 1912. She was selected as a nurse in April 1915 but withdrawn in June 1915.
