Gertrude was born in April 1988. In 1911 she was living at 94 Castle Street, Oswestry. She trained as a nurse at Birkenhead Borough Hospital from 1912-1915.
The hospital was built in 1862. As wounded soldiers arrived at nearby Woodside Railway Station they were stretchered off and sent to the hospital for treatment. Gertrude continued working there until she returned to Oswestry in 1924. The train of injured soldiers would often be packed and they would have just been on a long ship ride as well. Many would only have had their wounds dressed and would have been in a bad condition when they arrived, meaning she would have to have been very skilled in dealing with their wounds.
Gertrude lived at 2 Stewart Street when she died on 3/5/1930, leaving £171 6s 11d to her widowed mother Sarah Jane Day.
